Community Outreach

At Security Public Storage, one of the values we hold deepest is to be active members of the communities where we have storage locations. We serve and employ so many people that being a presence in our communities comes naturally. Each of our locations has or plans to host a variety of community events and initiatives from pet adoption to street clean up to food drives. Learn more about how we’re helping, feeding, cleaning up and beautifying these communities we call home.

Cleaning Up Locally For the Planet

At SPS, we’re always thinking about the planet and how we can implement green initiatives throughout our storage locations. One of the best ways to show up for the planet is by cleaning up trash in our local communities.

In April 2022, SPS Portland provided the SOLVE organization with a “homebase” for meeting up before going out to clean up trash in NW Portland. Solve is a non-profit that helps clean up trash around Portland. They partnered with SPS for an event to clean up the neighborhood. Between the two SOLVE reps, numerous volunteers, and three SPS employees, we were able to get 888 lbs. of trash off the streets! Echelon Protective Services set up a BBQ and grilled burgers and hot dogs for both volunteers and houseless folks in the community as they did outreach. Shout out to Jen, Gavin and Tina for being willing to roll up their sleeves and get dirty for this event. We love being able to contribute to cleaning up the neighborhood!

Coming Together to Feed Our Communities

Food insecurity has risen sharply during the past few years. At SPS, we are dedicated to actively serving and contributing to the communities in which we live and work. In February 2023, we came together to combat food insecurity in our communities. For the entire month, SPS sponsored food drives at 18 of our 51 locations – three facilities in each of our six regions, covering the entire SPS community across the US.

In San Mateo, our site managers Barry and Tyler teamed up with some of our local marketing partners to collect dry food items. Collected donations were donated to local food banks, making a big difference to people in each of our communities. We expanded our participation this year by region to ensure that all of our communities receive the food needed, especially during the cold winter months.

Auctioning Unwanted Items for Charitable Donations

One of the most treasured members of the SPS family is SPS San Francisco site manager Charles Ruiz. He cares greatly for his customers and community. He helped implement the Charity Storage program at SPS San Francisco, with more locations coming soon.

We recognized the need to provide tenants with an easier option to dispose of unwanted items. Unwanted items are auctioned through our Charity Storage program and the profits are donated to five different charities. The Charity Storage program fills a gap in facility services, enhances the tenant experience, and supports the communities where we do business.

“We give tenants the ability to not have to go to Goodwill or Salvation Army,” Charles says of the program. “It is an easy load off their hands to just leave the items they do not want to keep at our facility. My customers really appreciate it.”

SPS donates to the following charity organizations:

  • American Red Cross
  • Wounded Warrior Project
  • American Heart Association
  • The Humane Society of the United States
  • Lilliput Families

Together we turn your unwanted items into charitable donations that go towards helping people and animals in our communities.

Bringing Joy via Toys for Tots

Each year, SPS hosts a Toys for Tots donation drive at all of our self-storage locations across the West Coast and the Washington DC metro area. Every year beginning on November 1, staff, customers and community members donate new toys in designated bins at our facilities. The Toys for Tots donation drive at SPS typically lasts through the first week of December. We then tally up the toy count at each of our locations and the gifts are distributed throughout our local communities. The Toys for Tots program has been a bright spot for many families across the country, sending a message of hope to children in our communities.

We’re Just Getting Started

It’s truly an honor to be an active member of the communities where we live and do business. From beautifying local landscapes with our community murals to providing food for families in our local communities, our commitment to our communities runs deep. We’re just getting started – we’re encouraging all of our storage locations across the West Coast and in the Washington DC metro area to get involved in their communities. We’re looking forward to a pet adoption event in Manteca and can’t wait to share how else we show up for our communities.
