Green Initiatives

We want to highlight some of the green initiatives we implement here at Security Public Storage. It’s important to us to do our part to help restore and protect the planet. It’s essential to carry out these promises and actions in order to preserve the earth. From retrofitted LED lighting to paperless billing, SPS works hard to protect the earth, one small step at a time.

Storage Facilities Retrofitted with LED Lights

With 51 self-storage locations on the West Coast and in the Washington DC metro area, it’s important for us to reduce our energy consumption, which in turn decreases carbon emissions released into the environment. Carbon emissions play a key role in climate change, which has accelerated in recent years. At SPS, we have retrofitted all of the lighting at our facilities from fluorescent bulbs to LED.

LED lighting offers a variety of benefits because it functions differently than traditional fluorescent bulbs. LED bulbs use a small fraction of the energy that fluorescent bulbs do and last up to 80% longer, illuminating spaces for 30,000 to 50,000 hours. Longer lifespans result in less waste, as the bulbs don’t have to be replaced as often. The environmental benefits of LED lighting made this an easy choice for SPS.

Retention Ponds and Sustainable Landscaping

Several of our self-storage facilities utilize retention ponds, which come with many benefits. Retention ponds help manage stormwater quantity and quality. This results in decreased transfer of pollutants and chemicals into nearby bodies of water. Storing water in retention ponds helps our conservation efforts by making it available for non-potable uses, including irrigation. The water in retention ponds is treated through sedimentation and nutrient uptake.

We strive to achieve sustainable landscaping at all of our self-storage facilities. Through natural landscaping, such as desert plants in arid climates rather than sod and large grassy areas, we decrease the amount of water needed for hydrating. SPS has beautifully landscaped grounds that minimize water usage and are designed with conservation in mind.

Metal Door Recycling

Over the years, we have upgraded thousands of the metal doors used on our storage units. This results in tons of metal. We don’t let a scrap of this metal go to waste. SPS recycles all of our old metal doors by donating them scrap metal yards and local police and fire departments . In Sacramento, the fire department was able to use many of our old metal doors to good use. Other fire and police departments have been able to reuse our old storage unit doors for training.

Paperless Billing and Storage Contracts

Reducing the amount of paper used in our contract process and in regular billing is another way we can help the environment. At SPS, you can rent a storage unit online, sign your contract digitally and opt for paperless billing. Through technology, we have been able to decrease the amount of paper used in our business operations, which has been a benefit for both the environment and through these touch-less times.

Living Roof at SPS Bethesda

Our building at SPS Bethesda features a living roof, which is under stewardship and has been flourishing. We initially installed the living roof in Bethesda as a way to offset our greenspace requirements from the county when we built the 5223 building. Stewards have helped maintain irrigation and ensure the roof is not only living, but thriving. A beautiful roof space filled with wildflowers is one way we have committed to decreasing our carbon footprint at SPS Bethesda.

Reducing Environmental Impact in Self Storage

We collectively look at ways to help protect and restore the environment and address the factors that have contributed to climate change. At SPS, we continue to examine our own operations in order to adopt more sustainable business practices. We’re all in this together to help restore and preserve this planet for ourselves and future generations.
