Salinas, South Wall (2019)

Salinas Community Mural

A second mural was added at SPS Salinas celebrating its rich history and heritage, from John Steinbeck and Mexican settlers to its ideal climate and luscious produce. The ribbon-cutting was featured on two local TV news stations and had front-page coverage in the local paper. Design: McHale Creative; installation: Mural Décor. The second mural spans the entire south face of the SPS facility. It is the largest in the Salinas area and is clearly visible from Highway 101.

The mural depicts the history of the area’s people and industries from the first residents, the Ohlone people, through the arrival the Spanish in the 1700s, and today’s vibrant Mexican/Latino heritage. The mural reflects the prosperity of Salinas during the Depression through the eyes of John Steinbeck’s novels and the Art Deco architecture that has been preserved in many of the area’s historic buildings. The official unveiling was attended by officials from the City of Salinas, the Steinbeck Center and several local and regional arts commissions!
