Sacramento – Fruitridge Ave. (2022)

Vacaville Community Mural

The social justice mural at SPS Sacramento on Fruitridge Avenue was designed and painted by artist Jerry Ragg, owner of Mural Decor. Jerry has been the artist for many of our other murals in California, and we believe he continues to out-do himself with each new mural. Jerry also painted our newer murals in Oceanside and Vacaville.

Our latest mural prominently features these leaders of the social justice movement:

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became the most visible leader and activist of the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King asked us to dream of an end to racism in the United States, and he fought for civil and economic rights.

Rosa Parks played a pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott, earning her the titles “first lady of civil rights” and “mother of the freedom movement”. On December 1,1955, Parks refused to vacate her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, becoming an icon of non-violent resistance.

Cesar Chavez, along with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which eventually merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) to become the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union.

Dolores Huerta co-founded NFWA with Cesar Chavez and is known as one of the most influential American labor activists. Huerta led boycotts and protests in the ‘60s and ‘70s, which resulted in farm workers forming unions and negotiating for better wages and conditions.

SPS dedicates this stunning new art installation to the citizens of Sacramento. It is intended to honor these inspirational leaders of the social justice movement.
