El Cerrito (2024)

El Cerrito Community Mural

At Security Public Storage, we are grateful for the enthusiastic response to the “Eastshore Heritage” mural, a striking new landmark visible from the I-80 corridor. Designed and painted by renowned mural artist Jerry Ragg of Mural Decor, and was completed in September 2024.

The “Eastshore Heritage” mural is Security Public Storage’s 17th commissioned community mural, reflecting our ongoing commitment to celebrating local culture and history. Approved unanimously by the City of El Cerrito Arts & Culture Commission on April 22, 2024, the design was the result of over two years of collaboration and consideration of various themes, styles, and elements.

Honoring El Cerrito’s Rich Heritage

The six unique panels of the “Eastshore Heritage” mural highlight iconic landmarks, historical milestones, and cultural contributions that define El Cerrito and the surrounding East Bay region.

El Cerrito Del Norte BART Station: As a major transit hub, the Del Norte BART Station connects El Cerrito to AC Transit, North Bay bus operators, and the greater Bay Area transportation network, making it a critical lifeline for commuters.

East Shore Industrial History – Rosie the Riveter: During World War II, the East Bay’s shipyards brought an influx of workers, quadrupling El Cerrito and Richmond’s population. Rosie the Riveter symbolizes the vital role women played in the war effort. Visit the nearby Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond to explore this inspiring legacy.

Cerrito Theater: First opened on Christmas Day in 1937, the Cerrito Theater has been a cherished cultural landmark. Reopening in 2009 as Rialto Cinemas Cerrito, it continues to offer a glimpse into El Cerrito’s storied past.

El Cerrito Recycling + Environmental Resource Center: A pioneer in environmental stewardship, El Cerrito’s Recycling Center embodies sustainability. It’s also home to the El Cerrito Creative Reuse Artist Residency (ECCRU) program, fostering creativity through recycled materials.

A Multicultural Tapestry: El Cerrito’s diverse population, including a strong history of Japanese American contributions, reflects its rich multicultural identity. In 2022, the city elected its first Japanese American mayor, underscoring its inclusive spirit.

Gateway to the East Bay: With breathtaking views of San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, and the Golden Gate Bridge, El Cerrito serves as a gateway to the East Bay. The I-80 corridor connects residents and visitors to an array of parks and natural landmarks.

SPS El Cerrito is proud to be part of the El Cerrito community and honored to contribute to its artistic and cultural landscape. Come celebrate with us and explore the mural that’s already become a local treasure!
