One of the main reasons many people move or need self storage comes from a separation, parting ways with someone, or some place, they lived previously. Going separate ways could be due to roommates moving on to the next phase of life, divorce, deployment, change in financial status, relocating for a job or a partner, or any number of reasons a separation of processions and place occurs. Parting ways can be both extremely good or very sad, but however you feel about it, it’s a new beginning.
Here at Security Public Storage, you can count on us to provide you with Self Storage with a Difference™. SPS will be here for you during each and every life transition, celebration, failure, every time you go your separate ways. After 40 years in the self-storage business, we’ve rounded up a few tips for you this moving season as you part ways with your current living arrangements.
Moving Season Tips When You’re Parting Ways
Take Inventory — If you’ve lived with someone for a while, be it a partner, sibling, roommate, friend or parent, odds are you’ve accumulated a lot of stuff and over time it’s intermingled. Taking inventory of what belongs to who and who will take items purchased mutually will help you separate your belongings as you pack to move.
- Downsize — Not everyone parting ways needs to downsize. Maybe you’re moving into a new home with your partner and have space to fill. If that isn’t the case, downsizing helps you maximize space in your storage unit or in your new place. Decide what you can donate, recycle, sell in a garage sale or toss. The best rule of thumb is, if you haven’t used it in a year and don’t plan to, it’s time to part ways with the item, too.
- Reserve a Storage Unit Online — Here at SPS, we make it easy for you to rent storage units online, which makes moving in day a breeze. Find the SPS storage location nearest you, browse their current availability online and book today. It’s important to us to offer honest pricing, so the price you see on our website is the price you’ll pay.
- Book Movers or Rent a Moving Truck — If your move requires movers or you plan on renting a moving truck and doing the heavy lifting yourself, booking these services in advance helps you remain cool, relaxed and on schedule come moving day.
- Pick Up Packing and Moving Supplies — If you rent a storage unit from SPS, our storage locations include a selection of packing and moving supplies for sale. Visit us in-person and pick up your boxes, locks, bubble wrap and other packing materials.
Start Packing — Many moving tips and guidelines will give you a number of days to start packing before you move from two weeks to 10 days, generally. In reality, sometimes you don’t have 10 days. Start packing after the separation of possessions has occurred and remember to label boxes with details to help you identify what’s inside later.
- Change Utilities and Address — Whenever you move, it’s important to update your address with the United States Post Office. Visit the USPS website and put in a mail-forwarding request to ensure your mail is delivered to your new address. Additionally, don’t forget to update your address with banks, credit cards, insurance, magazine subscriptions, and schools. Make arrangements to disconnect your current utilities and to have them set up at your new address.
- Moving Day — Make sure you have all non-essential items packed up before moving day. When the day arrives, pack essentials in your car, like clothes and shoes for the next day, bathroom items, bedding, food, pet supplies, tools and electronics. Don’t forget to take breaks, drink lots of water, and stop for lunch. After everything is moved out and cleaned out, it’s time for lights outs and the door locked behind you.
Moving Out and Moving On
Though people move all year round, the moving season hits the hardest in the summer. With warmer weather, kids out of school, and sunshine extending longer into the evenings, it’s no wonder people choose to make big life changes going into the summer. If you’ll be parting ways with your current living arrangements, we hope SPS can make the transition as easy and stress-free as possible for you when it comes to self storage and moving supplies.
