This month, we wanted to discuss tips for moving out of a storage unit. We hate to see you go, but we also understand that self storage is temporary. At Security Public Storage, we support our customers with excellent customer service from the first interaction through the last. It’s important to us to have resources available for you, so your questions can be answered quickly and effectively. How to move in can be pretty straightforward, but we wanted to answer any questions you have about moving out of a storage unit.

How to Move Out of a Storage Unit

First, before moving out of your storage unit, it’s important to contact the facility directly to cancel your lease. The on-site managers at all of our locations can answer any questions you may have about moving out of your storage unit, for example, how to cancel auto-pay. At SPS, all of our storage unit leases are month-to-month, which means you can cancel at any time. Be sure to let your storage manager know when exactly you will be out, in order to avoid being charged for an additional month.

  • Reserve a truck if you need help moving out of your storage unit.
  • Clear everything out of your storage unit, so your account can be closed out. If you have items you no longer need, consider donating to a local charity to give them new life.
  • Clean your storage unit after removing all of your belongings. Sweep the unit out and clean up any spills or spots.
  • Remember to bring your lock home with you, as we require our renters to provide their own. You purchased the lock, it’s yours to take with you when leaving self storage. Leaving your storage unit locked may prevent us from confirming it’s vacant.
  • Check in at the front desk, settle your account, and you’ll be ready to go!

Vacating Your Storage Unit

On move-out day, be sure to arrive early enough to allow ample time to take care of everything without any additional stress. Many of our storage facilities have dollies and carts, which will be helpful as you move out. Carefully load your belongings into your vehicle or rented moving truck and ensure they’re all secured before leaving.

Dust, debris or dirt may have accumulated; marks or spills may have occurred. Sweep the entire storage unit floor and remove any trash. Before you leave, it’s wise to take several dated photos of your clean, empty storage unit for reference, if necessary. Be sure to remove your lock, as we cannot verify the unit is vacant if it is still secured with your lock.

Before leaving, inform the facility that you have vacated your unit. One of our storage managers will inspect the unit to confirm that it’s empty and clean. We always advise our customers to save all of the paperwork from your storage unit rental.

That’s it! Once the storage manager has signed off on your clean and empty storage unit, you’re ready to go. We thank you for your business, and we’ll be here if you need a storage unit rental in the future!
