For Terry Hemenes, rebuilding Security Public Storage after the devastating Tubbs fire in October 2017 is personal. Terry’s parents came to SPS Santa Rosa in the mid-1990s to be the location’s first On-Site Managers when we acquired the property from ABC Mini Storage. Then Terry’s twin sister managed the property for 19 years before Terry took over as the On-Site Manager 6 years ago.
Santa Rosa Fire Damage
The fire damaged or destroyed entire neighborhoods, moving more quickly than some residents could run. So, from when the SPS facility was first threatened, Terry wasn’t just watching over a business, she was literally protecting her home, along with the belongings of literally hundreds of her customers. In the end, even though most units were spared, 132 storage units were lost.
Coffey Park Community Rebuilding
Over the past 1-½ years since the fire, our team has been a part of the community-wide rebuilding efforts. The residents, business owners, and public employees of Sonoma County have demonstrated what’s possible when communities work together to rebuild after such a devastating loss.
Homeowners, such as the Rosset family profiled in this Press Democrat article, help other homeowners with the complex process of rebuilding.
Even county and city building officials have streamlined their permitting process to help keep pace with the volume of home and building plans that need to be reviewed. Their flexibility in the face of unprecedented circumstances is highlighted in this NPR interview with David Guhin, Assistant City Manager for Santa Rosa.
As we prepare to reopen the recently rebuilt section at SPS Santa Rosa, we’d like to give a big shout-out to the local businesses that responded immediately following the fire and to the many SPS customers who are returning - who actually never left - the SPS family!
Look for our Grand Re-Opening around Friday, July 26th!
