Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Security Public Storage! This Thanksgiving, we wanted to express our gratitude for our local communities, our employees and our customers — while taking a look back on the past year through the eyes of SPS. From the grand reopening of our Santa Rosa self-storage facility to company-wide fundraising efforts to customers who feel like family. The past year brought ups and downs, art and awareness — and with Toys for Tots in full-swing, we’re not slowing down yet!

Thankful for Our Local Communities

First, we’re thankful for our local communities, who have banded together in support of each other and the greater good. We love being able to impact the local communities where we have self-storage facilities from the West Coast to the Washington D.C. metro area. We pride ourselves on working with great organizations like Habitat For Humanity Restore, the Red Cross and Toys for Tots. Several memories stand out from the past year and we’re especially thankful to have been a part of these communities.

Salinas Mural Pays Homage to Local History

The SPS Salinas facility features a mural that spans nearly two football fields and honors the community’s history and works as an agricultural hub. We love beautifying our self-storage facilities and their outdoor spaces within the community with locally themed images. The mural was designed by Kathy McHale, a graphic designer, and painted by local artist Jerry Ragg in just over three weeks.

The mural focuses on a Depression-era woman holding a basket of produce, which references the endurance Salinas had and the prosperity people found. A ranch home and the historic Oldtown Fox Theater flank her and silhouettes of people in row crops pay homage to Braceros that played a role in the local agriculture history. The mural features Spanish and Mexican influences and later references John Steinbeck’s books.

We unveiled the mural on May 29, 2019, and it brought the community together.

Flags of Valor in Ashburn

Brian Steorts, a veteran who served three years in the Army and 12 in the Air Force, started the company Flags of Valor when he wanted to buy an American flag and realized that most of them were manufactured in another country. Flags of Valor, an Ashburn-based company, has sold more than 25,000 flags since Steorts and a fellow veteran started three years ago. He developed a wooden American flag that has become the company’s trademark piece.

All of the flags are made in America by veterans. Forty veterans, including some injured in combat and dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, work full-time making the company’s products. SPS Ashburn often partners with Flags of Valor, which led to the company donating a flag to the facility.

In 2019, SPS Ashburn raffled off the flag in a special way that continues the philanthropic efforts for veterans that Flags of Valor stands for. We raised $2,005 for Boulder Crest Retreat, which is a retreat for veterans who are dealing with mental health illnesses. Everyone who donated to the cause was entered into the raffle and we presented the winner their flag at the Tarara Winery Summer Concert Series.

Thankful For Our Employees

We’re grateful for our employees all across the country that continue to keep the wheels turning all year long. In addition to the great work they do at our self-storage facilities and in our corporate offices, they make coming to work fun and have banded together to make a difference in good times and bad. Our Santa Rosa location experienced damage and loss during the Paradise fires. Everything had to be rebuilt and we had a grand reopening that brought together our employees and the community. We’re exceptionally thankful for all of the SPS employees.

Camp Fire Fundraiser

SPS check for funds raised for victims of the Camp Fire

At the end of 2018, our employees and ownership pulled together to raise funds for the Camp Fire Relief Fund. The Camp Fire resulted in 153,335 acres burned, structures destroyed and lives lost. With many of our self-storage facilities located in this area of California, it was important for our employees to take action to help the affected communities. Between employee personal donations and the owners’ matching donations, a $7,214 check was written to the North Valley Community Foundation’s Camp Fire Relief Fund. SPS employees donated $1,765, which was then matched by our owners. The owners also donated an additional 2% of all new rental revenue from November 15, 2018, through December 25, 2018.

Red Nose Day

Since launching in 2015, Red Nose Day has raised funds to end child poverty. Funds raised are split evenly to support domestic and international programs that ensure children in need are safe, healthy and educated. This year, SPS employees at all of our sites across the country were encouraged by one another to buy red noses at Walgreens and to share their photos on social media. Our employees went out and bought red noses and donated funds to support this worthy cause all on their own. We couldn’t be more proud of our fun and philanthropic employees.

Thankful For Our Customers

Above all, we’re thankful for YOU, our customers! We love building bonds with our customers like they are family. We always receive photos from our site managers of them with customers. We’re grateful for your loyalty — we compared notes to see which facility has the longest-running tenant and one of our San Francisco locations has a customer that has been there for 33 years! Talk about loyalty!

Our extra helpful customers, the Raders

We love hearing stories about our customers helping other customers. Mr. and Mrs. Rader, tenants at our Roseville-Galleria facility, went above and beyond to help a struggling family transfer all of their possessions out of their storage unit on a blistering hot day. The Raders wished to express that we should all be willing to help our fellow man and that a good deed should be the norm, not the exception.

At SPS, we salute the Raders and all of the individuals like them who go out of their way to make the world a better place one good deed at a time.

Happy Thanksgiving From SPS

We’re grateful all year long for our customers, our employees and our local communities, but we wanted to express this during the holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at SPS. Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey and for being a part of ours. Here’s to another great year of community and camaraderie in 2020.
