SPS Sites Begin Collecting Toys for Tots on November 1!

It’s that time of year again! As Halloween inches closer to the rearview, our focus turns to the annual U.S. Marines’ Toys for Tots donation drive. This year represents the 23rd consecutive year with some Security Public Storage locations participating and the 6th consecutive year with 100% participation by all of our facilities! All SPS sites will have donations bins available beginning Sunday, November 1 and will be collecting new, unwrapped toys through Friday, December 4.

Toys for Tots with Covid Safety Precautions

toys for tots donationsAs with all of our operations, we have the safety of you and our staff in mind with this year’s Toys for Tots donation drive. We have advised our sites to place their donation bins outside of the office if it is safe to do so and if the weather permits. When bins cannot be placed outside, we will continue to follow SPS Covid guidelines of social distancing — 1 or 2 (depending on the site) customers in the office at a time and masks are required.

Donation drives like Toys for Tots will make a big impact this year on families affected by the pandemic and the current state of the economy. If you have the ability to donate, we know it will be greatly appreciated, especially during these turbulent times.

Donate to Toys for Tots at SPS

We encourage our customers, staff members and everyone throughout our local communities to donate new, unwrapped toys at the SPS location nearest you. We collect toys for all ages, but toys for teens are always needed. It warms our hearts to be able to help children in our communities who may not otherwise have gifts to open during the holiday season. We participate annually in the Toys for Tots program because we believe in making a difference in the communities we serve.

In 2019, our self-storage facilities collected 2,148 toys, an increase of 765 from the previous year. Each of the past three years has been record-breaking with all SPS sites participating. Walking into many of our sites during the last week of the donation drive feels like entering a toy store, which brings us great joy. We truly have the best customers and love that together we can help so many children and families.

About Toys for Tots

In 1947, Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Henricks took inspiration from his wife Diane, who have handcrafted several dolls and asked him to deliver them to an agency that supports children in need. When Bill could not find one, Diane implored him to start one and Toys for Tots emerged as an annual holiday tradition. Henricks and the Marines in his reserve collected and distributed 5,000 toys in Los Angeles.

Today, the Marines’ Toys for Tots Foundation raises funds, purchasing toys, managing funds, educates the public, solicits corporate support, and provides promotional and support materials. The program distributes an average of 18 million toys to 7 million less fortunate children each year. We are proud to participate in the Toys for Tots program annually.
