As a new year dawns, you may notice the bombardment of ads to join a gym, buy an expensive stationary bicycle, or begin a new diet. Starting the year healthy doesn’t have to mean overpriced gym memberships or equipment or changing your body. We’re planning on making 2023 our healthiest year yet — mentally, physically and emotionally. The idea of starting the year healthy may be a far stretch for those who caught Covid, the flu or RSV over the holiday break. Have no fear, you’ll recover and can begin a healthy 2023 soon.

Protect Yourself From Covid-19, the Flu and RSV

While at times it doesn’t seem like it, we’re still amid a global pandemic, and a bunch of other respiratory illnesses have decided to join in. It’s important in many parts of the country to protect yourself from the flu, Covid and RSV, as cases have climbed recently. The best way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated and boosted. Additionally, avoid large crowds, wear a mask, wash hands frequently and stay home if you’re feeling sick.

get plenty of rest Get Plenty of Rest

Prioritize your immune system by allowing yourself plenty of time to rest. From getting 8-hours of sleep a night to taking time off from hustling to relax at home. Establish a regular bedtime and wake up time, while also avoiding caffeine later in the day. Getting plenty of rest helps your immune system stay strong and healthy, giving you a better barrier against possible infections. Our bodies and minds need time to rest, so consider slowing down and resting more in 2023.

Prioritize Your Mental Health

Start prioritizing your mental health by minimizing your screen time and getting outside every day. Spending time outside, away from screens, is a small, healthy habit that will make a big difference in your daily mental health. Also, consider meditating for 10 minutes a day and starting a journaling and gratitude practice. Writing out your thoughts is a great way to get out of your head. If you need an extra boost, start practicing affirmations each morning – the way you talk to yourself matters.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help – talking to a professional therapist or counselor may be the big step you take in 2023 to improve your mental health.
