How much time do you have? Because it would take years to visit the sites and enjoy the activities this area of California has to offer! The rich heritage of Salinas is celebrated through two large murals commissioned by Security Public Storage for their facility located here.

The new SPS mural seen across the field The second mural has just been completed this month (May 2019). Spanning the entire south face of the SPS facility, it is the largest in the Salinas area and is clearly visible from Hwy 101.

The mural depicts the history of the area’s people and industries from the first residents, the Ohlone people, through the arrival the Spanish in the 1700s, and today’s vibrant Mexican/Latino heritage. The mural reflects the prosperity of Salinas during the Depression through the eyes of John Steinbeck’s novels and the Art Deco architecture that has been preserved in many of the area’s historic buildings. The official unveiling is on May 29th, and will be attended by officials from the City of Salinas, the Steinbeck Center and several local and regional arts commissions!

The first mural, completed in 2016, reflects importance of agriculture to the prosperity of the region.
